This course offers a basic introduction to leather working, using traditional oak tanned and modern chrome tanned leather and traditional hand tools.

It is a weekend course starting on Saturday morning and ending late on Sunday afternoon.

Students will be introduced to different types of leather, the different properties of leather and it’s various uses for different craft projects.

Students will also be introduced to the wide variety of tools used by the leather worker, many of which can be made at home.

During the course, students will have the opportunity to make themselves useful items such as belts, knife sheaths, small bags and pouches.  These will introduce the student to selecting suitable leather, cutting it out, tooling it if appropriate, and stitching it using different stitching techniques.

Once the student has mastered these techniques, they can select to attend one of our advanced courses where they can choose a larger project to try such as a leather drinking tankard, or perhaps a water bottle.  These use molten beeswax to harden and waterproof them and the student will be taken through each process, using the skills previously learned, to make one for themselves that they can take home afterwards.

All leather and tools will be provided.

Just to tempt you, and to let you see some of the stuff you can make for yourself, here’s some PDF files to download.  They are templates scaled 1:1.  If you come to the course, you’ll be shown how they are stitched together and finished.
